Description

A chess like game where each player has a selection of summoned creatures and spells. There are multiple army configuration, board configuration and play modes.

Objective

Make a chess like game with a fantasy theme to have various cool units, being able to customize your army and have various ways to play.

Inspiration

Chess is the primary source of inspiration. You could also add Shogi which could give me a few additional ideas. The YuGiOh series also had some cool ideas. The "Nightmare chess" board game gave me the idea of combining chess with cards.

Priority Evaluation

Theme vs Mechanics: Based on Mechanics, but not quitesure if it works well together.
Video vs Board Game: There is no platform restriction on this one.
Single vs Multi player: Multiplayer game for sure, 2 player is a must.
Rating = 5/12

Digitizability

- Cartography: I need a grid with stuff on it.
? Scripting: Not sure if units will have special powers, or cards with special powers. Unless units only have movement and capture path.

Mechanics

Each player creates an army of summoned creature. Each creature has various movement and attack patterns. Creatures can also have special abilities. The goal is to capture the opposite leading unit. It might be the sorcerer, not sure yet. There will be other victory conditions according to the play mode you are using (for example, capture the flag, football, touch the goal, etc)

There might also be special cards like in nightmare chess, maybe you would also have a custom deck of cards. Some cards might even be related to the pieces you have on the board.

The board is modular and made of various small board. There are pits and columns which are the main obstacle of the board. But you can also add special squares and traps on the board to spice things up.

I am not sure yet, But I was thinking of using a value, like stratego, on each of the piece. Not sure on how it could be used, maybe if a weak piece attack a strong one, the strong one can retaliate and both piece die.

Problems that prevent development

Balancing the pieces is the most complex part of the game. I found one "chess variants" some guide lines to make custom pieces. It might make it easier to design.
